John Melancon, Jr. Elected to Port Commission Board

(GALLIANO, LA) – At Saturday’s special election, voters in the 10th Ward of Lafourche Parish elected John Melancon, Jr. to fill Seat G on the Greater Lafourche Port Commission Board. Upon his win, Melancon said, “It’s an honor to be chosen and to serve in Johnny’s position. I will serve with pride and tradition.”

Melancon fills the vacancy created by the loss of his father, John J. Melancon, Sr., a seat to which John Jr. had been temporarily appointed until a special election could be held.

“As a personal friend of Johnny Sr., I have known John Jr. for many years,” said Board President Larry Griffin. “He’s done well on the board as an appointee, and I know I will be able to work well with him as an elected board member.”

Port Director Chett Chiasson also believes that John will be a strong addition to the Port Commission board. “We have faced challenging times over the past year, and as we continue to navigate through them, we’re proud to have a board member like John in our boat.”

Port Commissioners are elected for six-year terms. Melancon will hold Seat G for the remainder of the board’s 2007-2012 term.
