Sept. 19 @ 8:30 p.m. – TS Beta Phase 1 Storm Watch, Update 1

GLPC STORM WATCH
Tropical Storm Beta

UPDATE #1
Saturday, September 19, 2020
8:30 p.m.

The Port Commission is keeping an eye on the development of Tropical Storm Beta as it approaches the northern Gulf coast, and water levels are beginning to rise.

GLPC is moving to Storm Watch phase, which means that the Port Commission is monitoring the weather in the Gulf of Mexico for any signs of development or strengthening that may affect our area over the next several days. Businesses and coastal residents should be alert for new updates and warnings and need to be prepared to take quick action if necessary.

Coastal flooding, rainfall, and strong winds are all expected to impact the northern Gulf Coast. Although Port Fourchon is not under direct threat from Tropical Storm Beta, we are under an advisory due to coastal flooding concerns.

Rising water levels have caused some water encroaching on roadways below the Golden Meadow Lock.
Roads are currently open to vehicular traffic, but please drive with caution through low-lying areas. This may transition to road closure in the event of water overtopping LA 1 below the floodgates between Golden Meadow and Leeville.

There are no evacuation orders at this time.

Port Fourchon Harbor Police will be monitoring the condition of the roadway, and the Port Commission will send out updates as they become available.

Please review your facility’s hurricane plan, be thoughtful of stockpiling any loose material or excess items that could fly away or be damaged if Port Fourchon is affected by a storm, and make sure the Port Commission has your facility’s updated contact information so that you can receive timely storm-related information.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS IN THE PORT FOURCHON AREA:

  • RAINFALL: Potential for heavy rainfall. Slow movement of this system could create significant rainfall and associated flooding threats.
  • TIDES: Elevated tides could affect low-lying portions of the area.
  • WINDS: Strong winds possible.
  • ROADWAYS: Roads are currently open to vehicular traffic, but coastal flooding is a concern as always on Hwy 1 between Leon Theriot Flood Gates in Golden Meadow and Elevated Hwy 1 in Leeville.

WARNINGS, WATCHES, & ADVISORIES (Updated 9/19/2020 @ 4:00 PM):

  • Coastal Flood Advisory in effect for Lafourche Parish.
  • Wind Advisory in effect for Lafourche Parish.
