Belle Pass Dredging Under Way

may122006(GALLIANO, LA, MAY 12, 2006) –The channel to Port Fourchon is getting a “face lift” by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As a result of the 2005 hurricanes, shoaling in the channel is currently being removed and restoration of the rock entrance jetties will soon begin.

According to Port Director Ted Falgout, “These welcomed improvements may cause some temporary inconvenience for mariners, but will yield a much safer and efficient channel.” Dredging is expected to be complete by June 30, 2006.

Dredging will be performed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The dredge will be monitoring VHF-FM channels 13 and 16. Mariners are urged to transit the area at their slowest safe speed to minimize wake and proceed with extreme caution after passing arrangements have been made.
