(CUT OFF, LA) – At a formal ceremony during the July 11 board meeting, Randy Adams was sworn into office as an interim port commissioner for the Greater Lafourche Port Commission. Adams takes his place at Seat I, which was left vacant by the passing of his father-in-law, port pioneer and musical legend Ervin “Vin” Bruce.

Ervin Bruce leaves behind a long and storied history with both the port commission and the community it serves. Mr. Vin officially served as a member of the Greater Lafourche Port Commission board for 20 years, most of them as chairman of the construction committee. He was appointed in June 1998 to fill Robert Champagne’s seat, was subsequently elected by special election to complete that term through 2000, then re-elected for three full terms as Port Commissioner by the people of the Tenth Ward of Lafourche Parish before his passing in June 2018.

Before commissioners were elected, however, Bruce worked on what would become Port Fourchon with its founding father, Louisiana State Senator A.O. Rappelet. Mr. Vin told tales of holding the tape measure for “Rap” while he planned out his vision for the port. While Ervin Bruce held down a career in construction, he also, according to his fellow commissioners, “put us on the map” with his music. Vin Bruce brought Cajun music to the masses, winning awards and hearts throughout his long musical career.

Board President Perry Gisclair said of Mr. Vin, simply, “He was a great man, and his legend will always live on.”

Newly sworn in commissioner Randy Adams is also held in high regard in the community and was Mr. Vin’s choice to fill his seat once he was no longer able to do so. “It is a privilege and an honor to fulfill Mr. Vin’s term,” said Commissioner Adams. “Being affiliated with the port for so many years, I have always been aware of how Port Fourchon brings jobs and revenue into the parish, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

Randy Adams is the president and owner of Sea Support Ventures, LLC, a local family-owned marine transportation business. He is married to Melinda Bruce Adams, daughter of Ervin Bruce, and their extended family is active locally, both in business and in the community.

“Randy’s knowledge and experience are an asset to the commission,” said Executive Director Chett Chiasson. “We look forward to working with him over the next six months.”

Adams will serve as commissioner for Seat I for the remainder of the board’s term through 2018.
